For experienced performers ready to deepen their practice, build ensemble, and create new work.

Whether you’ve been doing this work with us for a while or you’re an experienced player looking for a new creative challenge, Embodied Story Shaping is an opportunity to go deeper into the physical, emotional, intuitive, and collaborative possibilities of improvisation.

This 10-week practice facilitated by Barbara Colaciello explores movement, repetition, gesture, rhyme, timed movement “machines,” and devised scenes, while developing our ability to access, expand, and master the emotional instrument. We work with the body, imagination, instinct, and emotion as creative tools, learning to access them consciously and use them with greater range, presence, and precision.

The work calls for focus, stamina, vulnerability, presence, and connection. We’re not simply improvising scenes. We’re exploring how to enter a moment, respond truthfully, shape a story, and bring emotional life to the work.

The 10-Week Arc

The first five weeks are a period of exploration, experimentation, and ensemble building. At the five-week mark, we’ll look together at who is in the room, what we’ve created, everyone’s availability through the holiday period, and what kind of performance is realistically possible.

We are working toward proposed performances on December 8 and 9.

I believe witnessing is an essential part of the creative act. What we discover in the room becomes fully alive when it is shared with an audience.

The second half of the session will be devoted to developing and shaping the work that has emerged.

The goal is not to arrive with the performance already figured out. It is to discover what this particular ensemble can make together, and then carry that discovery into performance.

This class is intended for experienced improvisers and actors who want to work as part of an evolving ensemble and contribute to the creation of new work.
